Rainforest at your back. The Great Barrier Reef out front. Fourteen kilometres of coastline, and room to actually breathe.
Mission beach sits on the Cassowary Coast, about two hours south of Cairns and two hours north of Townsville. Four villages strung along fourteen kilometres of palm lined shore, with the Great Barrier Reef offshore and World Heritage rainforest directly behind.
There was a time when Byron Bay was simply a beautiful coastal town. Before the crowds. Before the traffic. Before beachfront property became the preserve of a small group of very wealthy buyers. It was a place where you could move for the lifestyle, buy a home near the beach and become part of a community.
Mission Beach still feels like that.
Here’s what’s available right now. If nothing fits, register below. A good share of what sells here never reaches a portal.

Not the brochure version. The ordinary Tuesday version, which is the one that matters when you’re deciding where to live.

Block sizes and distance from the neighbours that most coastal markets stopped offering a long time ago.

A small, genuine café and dining scene, plus the markets everyone turns up to. The places worth knowing are listed below.

Rainforest walks, waterfalls, cassowaries in the wild, and a climate built for living outdoors.

Schools, medical, shops and services. The practical side, described honestly.

Dunk Island and the Family Islands sit just offshore, and the Great Barrier Reef beyond them. Snorkelling, diving, fishing, or a day on a sandbar stop being things you plan a year around. They become what you do on a Saturday.

You’ve just fallen for the place. Here’s what you’ll need when you explain the idea to a partner, an accountant, or yourself at 2am.
Byron is the shorthand every Australian understands for an iconic coastal life. We are not suggesting Mission Beach should become the next Byron. If anything it is the opposite. Mission Beach already has many of the qualities that made Byron so desirable in the first place. The difference is that here, they are still accessible.
The finest of the three properties we’re bringing to market.
Our appraisal, based on comparable Byron Bay sales.
Further down the scale, an acre and a half with a four-bedroom home on it sits around $1.2 million. There aren’t many places left on the east coast where that’s still possible.
Figures are Brae & Josie’s own appraisal of their listings, and their estimate of comparable Byron Bay values. This is a professional opinion, not a valuation, not published market data, and not a forecast of future prices.

We sell property on this coastline because we chose to live on it. Between Townsville and Cairns there is a stretch of Queensland that most people drive straight past, and we have spent years watching the ones who stop quietly rearrange their lives around it.
We started Better Than Byron because we kept having the same conversation. Someone would describe the life they were looking for, and almost every time it was a description of Mission Beach. They just did not know the place existed, or they assumed it was out of reach. Usually it is not.
If you are still only researching, that is completely fine. Ring us anyway. We would far rather tell you honestly whether this suits you than sell you something that does not.

A conversation about the area, not a sales call. Plenty of people who contact us are still just researching, and that’s completely fine.
