Better Than Byron

Mission Beach · Tropical North Queensland

Rainforest at your back. The Great Barrier Reef out front. Fourteen kilometres of coastline, and room to actually breathe.

Discover Mission Beach

Mission Beach is one of Australia’s best-kept coastal secrets

Mission beach sits on the Cassowary Coast, about two hours south of Cairns and two hours north of Townsville. Four villages strung along fourteen kilometres of palm lined shore, with the Great Barrier Reef offshore and World Heritage rainforest directly behind.

There was a time when Byron Bay was simply a beautiful coastal town. Before the crowds. Before the traffic. Before beachfront property became the preserve of a small group of very wealthy buyers. It was a place where you could move for the lifestyle, buy a home near the beach and become part of a community.

Mission Beach still feels like that.

Ocean, fishing and food

Why people choose to stay

Not the brochure version. The ordinary Tuesday version, which is the one that matters when you’re deciding where to live.

The ocean, fishing and boating

Fourteen kilometres of coastline across four villages, Dunk Island on the horizon and the Great Barrier Reef beyond it. No surf, but diving, boating and water you actually get out on.

Space & privacy

Block sizes and distance from the neighbours that most coastal markets stopped offering a long time ago.

Food & local life

A small, genuine café and dining scene, plus the markets everyone turns up to. The places worth knowing are listed below.

Nature & outdoor living

Rainforest walks, waterfalls, cassowaries in the wild, and a climate built for living outdoors.

Community & everyday life

Schools, medical, shops and services. The practical side, described honestly.

Two hours from two airports

Cairns one way, Townsville the other. Far enough to feel like an escape, close enough that you’re not stranded.

The beach you don't have to share

Fourteen kilometres of coastline across four villages. Walk from one to the next in the morning and you may not pass another person, with Dunk Island on the horizon the whole way. This is not a beach you queue for a park at. It is the one at the end of your street.

The Reef is your weekend, not your holiday

Dunk Island and the Family Islands sit just offshore, and the Great Barrier Reef beyond them. Snorkelling, diving, fishing, or a day on a sandbar stop being things you plan a year around. They become what you do on a Saturday.

Rainforest on one side, reef on the other

Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest runs right down to the beach, so the drive home passes waterfalls and walking tracks rather than traffic. It is also wilder than Byron. You watch for crocodiles and stingers rather than sharks, and you learn to respect the environment. Honestly, that is part of what makes it extraordinary.
Where to eat

The places worth knowing

Small towns are judged on their coffee and their dinner. Here’s where the locals go.

The practical case

The reasons that survive a second conversation

You’ve just fallen for the place. Here’s what you’ll need when you explain the idea to a partner, an accountant, or yourself at 2am.

01

Premium coastal living, more accessible

In Byron Bay and other tightly held premium coastal markets, prime beachfront can command $10 million to $30 million or more. In Mission Beach, exceptional beachfront is more typically $3 million to $5 million. We are not pretending that is affordable in the ordinary sense. These are premium properties. The point is what the money buys.

02

More land, more space, more privacy

Scale, setbacks and tropical gardens that change how a home actually lives day to day. Space is the first thing an established coastal market runs out of, and it is the hardest thing to get back.
03

Quieter and less commercialised

A coastline that has not been built out, and shows no sign of racing to be. The village atmosphere is the asset here, not something to be developed away.
04

A home, a holiday house or an investment

Buyers use Mission Beach three ways. Some move here permanently. Some retire, or work remotely. Some buy a holiday home that becomes the place a family comes back to year after year, rather than somewhere they rent for a week.
05

Natural attractions on the doorstep

The Great Barrier Reef, Dunk Island and the Family Islands, Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest and national parks. Here the natural environment is not the backdrop to the lifestyle. It is the lifestyle.
06

Amenities, services and community

Schools, medical, shops and services, described honestly. Interstate and overseas buyers will check anyway, so we would rather tell you first.
07

Connected and accessible

About two hours south of Cairns and two hours north of Townsville, which puts two regional cities and two airports within reach. Remote enough to feel like a genuine escape. Close enough that you never feel isolated.
08

Straightforward from interstate or overseas

Many of our buyers are in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Hong Kong. Video walk throughs, virtual inspections, and someone on the ground who can be at the property in twenty minutes.

09

Getting here

Fly into Cairns or Townsville, hire a car, and you are here in about two hours. Private transfers and helicopter access are available for those who prefer them, which matters if the property is going to be used often rather than once a year.
The proposition

Why we called it Better Than Byron

Byron is the shorthand every Australian understands for an iconic coastal life. We are not suggesting Mission Beach should become the next Byron. If anything it is the opposite. Mission Beach already has many of the qualities that made Byron so desirable in the first place. The difference is that here, they are still accessible.

We are not saying Mission Beach should become the next Byron. We are saying it might be better to discover it before it does.

Our appraisal, based on comparable Byron Bay sales.

Further down the scale, an acre and a half with a four-bedroom home on it sits around $1.2 million. There aren’t many places left on the east coast where that’s still possible.

Figures are Brae & Josie’s own appraisal of their listings, and their estimate of comparable Byron Bay values. This is a professional opinion, not a valuation, not published market data, and not a forecast of future prices.

“It's beautiful, but it hasn't lost its soul. There's space. There's community. There's incredible natural beauty. And you can still buy a genuinely exceptional home close to the beach without needing a Byron Bay sized budget.”

Brae & Josie - Bright Property Townsville

Meet Brae & Josie

We sell property on this coastline because we chose to live on it. Between Townsville and Cairns there is a stretch of Queensland that most people drive straight past, and we have spent years watching the ones who stop quietly rearrange their lives around it.

We started Better Than Byron because we kept having the same conversation. Someone would describe the life they were looking for, and almost every time it was a description of Mission Beach. They just did not know the place existed, or they assumed it was out of reach. Usually it is not.

If you are still only researching, that is completely fine. Ring us anyway. We would far rather tell you honestly whether this suits you than sell you something that does not.
